Why read this book?

A different question to bring to your day.

  • Name one area where your confidence extends beyond the reasons you can currently give.
  • Identify one rewarded habit and the kind of conduct it is making easier.
  • Separate a feared future into a known risk, a plausible possibility and an unsupported certainty.
Ideas you’ll explore

Start with something concrete.

  • Begin where certainty becomes difficult
  • Care for the way you become
  • Ignorance about the future has limits
Made for everyday life

Plato’s Apology presents Socrates defending himself before an Athenian jury. It is a dramatic philosophical text, not a neutral transcript of the trial. Socrates examines reputation, knowledge, civic duty and the value of questioning a life. This companion follows selected passages through contemporary situations. It does not turn questioning into a licence to humiliate people or treat Socrates as the final authority on every ethical problem. Read the dialogue for its arguments, tensions and particular setting.
