Why read this book?

A different question to bring to your day.

  • Trace one goal through two questions of what it is for. Notice where the answer becomes less clear.
  • Identify an excess, a deficiency and a fitting response in one ordinary situation.
  • Offer a friend attention that is not a disguised request for a service.
Ideas you’ll explore

Start with something concrete.

  • Ask what the achievement is for
  • The mean is not the middle of every dispute
  • Friendship can value the person
Made for everyday life

The Nicomachean Ethics asks about human flourishing and the activities, relationships and conditions through which it becomes possible. Aristotle connects character with repeated action, but does not reduce ethics to an individual habit tracker. Circumstances and external goods also matter. This companion examines selected ideas while acknowledging that Aristotle’s ancient social assumptions include exclusions contemporary readers should criticise. It offers original examples and exercises, not a complete account of his ethics or an endorsement of every conclusion.
