Why read this book?

A different question to bring to your day.

  • List what you can decide, what you can influence and what remains external in one situation.
  • Write one hope, then remove any hidden claim that the outcome must be guaranteed.
  • Choose a low-stakes situation to rehearse one considered response for three days.
Ideas you’ll explore

Start with something concrete.

  • Separate direction from possession
  • Desire can ask for an impossible contract
  • Practise before the difficult moment
Made for everyday life

The Enchiridion is a short handbook drawn by Arrian from the teaching of Epictetus. It begins with a distinction between what is up to us and what is not. This companion explores that distinction through judgments, roles and ordinary pressures. It also names a limit of simple modern summaries: political exclusion, illness and material harm are not solved by telling a person to adjust their attitude. The exercises concern thoughtful agency within circumstances, alongside appropriate action to change those circumstances.
